Let’s Boogie!

May 7th, 2008 by Rodney

Those were the days - dances at Kaimuki gym, Nuuanu Y, Manoa gym, etc. *sigh*

And the bands that played brings back great memories. Band like Greenwood, forgotten dynasty, Glass Candle, Johnny’s Rock Society, White Light, Pinky’s Rose Garden, Funny Company, etc. *sigh*

Then as we grew older and started hitting the nightclubs, more bands came to light such as Natural High, Power Point, Aura, Asian Blend, etc. *sigh*

Oh to be able to turn back the clock and relive those moments…

Well, guess what. This Saturday, May 10, you can relive those moments.

Check it out:

The $40 reserved tickets are sold out but the $35 open tickets are still available. Call your friends, old social club members, meatmarket nightclub buddies, co-workers, frat brothers, whoever, come stag if you like, but Let’s Boogie!

Call Candy Au to purchase your tickets before it’s sold out.

This is actually the 4th year that this 70’s Nightclub Reunion has taken place. I asked Candy how this all transpired and she said that Robin Kimura (of Greenwood), who’s like a brother to her, was having lunch with her one day and Candy said that it would be interesting to do a “Back to the 70’s” event. He laughed at her and said “no way” … too much work and who else would play besides them (Greenwood). Look… and four years later…

The first and second years, when it was held at the Ilikai, there were 600 and 700 people who attended, respectively. Last year, when it was moved to the Ala Moana Hotel (where Candy became the Director of Catering) there were 850 attendees, spread out among 2 ballrooms. This year it looks to be bigger yet.

Take a look at The Hawaii 70’s Night Club Reunion website. There’s a clip of Greenwood playing on the Andy Bumatai show as well as a jukebox with recordings from the past.

Greenwood even has their own website with cool stuff like pictures of the band from back in the 70’s, like this:

So dust off those puka shell necklaces, see if those bell bottoms still fit and get ready to boogie down! I’ll be wearing my silkie shirt and corduroy pants. My puka shell necklace has already been dusted.
